Diagnosis

Welcome to your first module in the Supporting Others course.

We aren’t going to be working with you to become a Counsellor or Therapist, that isn’t what this is about. This also isn’t about ‘fixing’ someone, we can’t do that. This is here to provide some practical methods of support for people across the Inherited Sight Loss community, helping them with practical elements of their wellbeing and have a few tools that we can walk through with them to point them in the right direction.

Here’s a quick introduction to get you started.

This first module is focused on supporting people at the Diagnosis phase of their Inherited Sight Loss Condition.

We will be going through the basics of how wellbeing, how the behaviours we engage in help to determine how we feel. We like to use our methodology of our behavioural Bananas and Doughnuts(TM) to help us simply understand which behaviours help us and which may have a negative impact over time.

Banana Behaviours

Imagine if you were to have a banana every day…you would only get healthier!
Each day your body is getting all those amazing nutrients, vitamins and minerals that it needs. You will have more energy and over time your health will only improve.

This is the same when it comes to our wellbeing. How we spend our time is like what we are eating. If we have a good set of behaviours we can turn to, this builds our foundation for being well.

What are those behaviours?

Our wellbeing is made up of five different areas of behaviour which build our foundation. These are.

MOVE – Anything that keeps us physically active but without it being pressured.

FOCUS – Focus refers to anything that brings us into the present moment, that gives us time to ourselves.

DISCOVER – DISCOVER is more than attending college or university, it’s about consistently searching for ways to develop our knowledge about ourselves, other people and the world.

COMMUNICATE – This is where we are typically being social, getting together with friends, family, colleagues, and other people within our lives.

HELP – HELP is all about supporting someone, lending a hand, or even just doing good deeds without the expectation of anything in return.

It’s really important throughout this process that as a Supporter, you model the healthy behaviours and actively use the tools we will be going through in this course so you aren’t just really familiar with them but you can draw from your real life experience so the people who are affecting in your life can see how effective this can be.

Let’s get started by watching the video. After the video, there are some activities for you to download and complete before moving on to the next module.

Next, after watching the video. It’s time to start on this week’s activities which you will find below.

Before downloading and making a start on the activities, if you haven’t already, it’s worth setting up a folder in your computer or on the files in your phone to safely store these activities so you can revisit them again in the future.

These documents are accessible Microsoft Word documents, if you aren’t used to Word, you may need to learn a little about Microsoft 365 before you access the activities in full.

At the end of each activity, there will be button that bring you back to the module. You will need to hold ‘Control’ on your keyboard and click your mouse at the same time.

Once you have gone through and completed the activities, please mark this module as ‘Complete’ and move on to the next part.
